Thanks to Wizkids the fast paced action of Halo has been brought from the digital realm to the physical one with Halo ActionClix. Sure the pace is slowed down slightly from the videogame, but it adds more of a social dynamic between the players, not to mention you’re actually looking at each other and not a tv screen.

The game is accessible to fans of Halo, fans of fast paced squad combat, or fans of collectible miniature games (CMG’s). The game is structured around the team slayer aspect of the Halo games and is very accurate to the feel of the videogame. Players take turns, representing the dance of a deathmatch in the videogame. You’ll find yourself making a move only to have your opponent respond to that move, strafing back and forth from fire to cover. Players will never get too comfortable behind cover, though, because grenades can wreak havoc. When your units die they respawn, letting the game focuses on quick and dirty skirmishes between your units. You won’t spend 5 minutes planning your next move because the game rewards aggressiveness.

Once you play a few games, you can whip through a game in about 25 minutes. The rules are easy to learn. Although, they come on the back of the maps you use for the battlefield, so you’ll need at least 4 boosters to be able to play the game and look at the rules or (recommended) you can just print them off of Wizkids HaloClix Web site — www.wizkids.com.

Another great part about this game is you don’t need to be rich to enjoy it at a competitive level. There’s a 400-point max for a squad of units and a lot of the super-rares (1 per 10 boosters) have 200 base points. Meaning a player with a few rares can compete with a player who has 20 because the game forces players to construct on a smaller scale. I bought 4 4-figure boosters and I received 1 super-rare (Tartarus) and 2 rares (Master Chief with plasma pistol and an smg and a Spartan with an energy sword).

Players new to CMG’s might find the rules a little overwhelming at first, but they’re really not that bad. If you give the rules a quick 5-10 minute read you’ll have the basic knowledge to play your first game. In your first game or two, I’d recommend only playing with one map and a 200 point limit to get a feel for the rules. This will make sure the games are short and you get a good feel for how the rules work. Just make sure you pay attention to the cards that come with the figures, they make acceptions to the rules to benefit your character. (Example: When you attack with an energy sword and you hit with it you roll a six-sided die. You add the number on the roll to the damage your character does and use that as your final damage amount, making the energy sword a lethal weapon as those who’ve played Halo 2 know very well.)

The game is incredibly versatile as well. You can play team deathmatches with 4 or more players, you can do free-for-alls with 3 or more, and there are a few different vehicle scenarios out right now.
Combine this gameplay with a tournament scene starting in October and you have a solid release for a new CMG.

To sum it up: If you’re even slightly interested in this game and you have some friends that are willing to give it a shot, you should buy it. Start with a few boosters 2-4 each and get to it.
